While most electronic and computer components contain trace amounts of heavy metals and must be responsibly disposed of, monitors and displays present a unique challenge. Non-flat panel monitors use a cathode ray tube, CRT for short, for the display. They can contain up to five pounds of lead and even trace amounts of lead can be poisonous. Disposal of CRT monitors is already regulated in many states and there is an international ban on their export to foreign countries for recycling. Even most LCD, or liquid-crystal display, monitors found in laptops and flat panel displays contain mercury and should be carefully recycled instead of being thrown away where the mercury can leak out and contaminate the environment.

Many, less scrupulous, recyclers will “recycle” a broken CRT monitor by shipping it over seas to be processed. These processing “plants” are crude waste fields that contaminate the environment and the underpaid workers who break apart the glass. Despite international conventions designed to prohibit this practice, it still continues. TechnoCycle is committed to keeping broken CRT monitors from being shipped overseas. This means we must cover the costs of proper and ethical processing. These costs are passed on to the customer through a modest disposal fee which is among lowest charged by recyclers with the same standards.

Your hard drives are full of sensitive information: credit card numbers, passwords, ID numbers, and licensed software are just some of the potential liabilities. Even a standard format or physical destruction of a hard drive is not sufficient to prevent against data theft because in both cases recoverable amounts of your data can still exist. At TechnoCycle we use a technique for data erasure, sometimes called “drive wiping” or “data destruction”, where special programs overwrite every possible section of a hard drive’s storage, sometimes multiple times, to ensure that the original data is completely unrecoverable. Merely deleting, or even reformatting a drive does NOT guarantee that your data is really erased. Our one pass data destruction is usually sufficient for most home and small office needs. For businesses that manage sensitive data we also offer multiple-pass data destruction that is Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) or Department of Defense qualified and includes an electronic log of the drives and computers wiped.
