BitMar Boycott bites back at Big Oil
June 4, 2008 at 10:17 am | Filed under: Green LivingBitMar.com claims to be preparing the first official gas boycott in the USA (and possibly the whole world). In a recent press release they appear confident that they have the “web-technology services” capable of doing what no other force on earth short of a hurricane has done in the last century. Stop Americans from pumping gas.
At least stop pumping gas from half of the major oil companies. The idea is that those companies will crumble under pressure and lower their prices. The other half of the oil companies will have to follow suit or risk falling under the gun themselves. It is an intriguing idea and certainly the current rise in fuel costs has a lot of people worried.
However, some analysts are pointing out that even $4-a-gallon gas is a bargain compared to fuel costs around the world. How much of the spike in gas prices is greed versus a diminishing supply? Or an increase in global demand?
As an employee of Houston’s best computer recycling company (at least we like to think so) my experience is that technology and specifically “web-technology services” are crucial to getting the word out about computer recycling. But will these types of grass-roots campaigns bring the giant energy companies to their knees? Should it?
A lot of amazing results are theoretically possible if we all do the same thing at once. But will we all care enough? Will Bitmar pull it off? Regardless of how you feel about the rise in gas prices this is a significant test of the power of technology in the green movement.

Do 97% of Americans really want a gas boycott?
